Manny's Hummer HVAC Page
Shortly after I bought my pre-owned Hummer, it exhibited some HVAC problems; mist coming in through the heat vents that smelled like maple syrup, defroster depositing a film on the windows - all symptoms of the dreaded "leaking heater core" common to Hummers from before 1998.
For those of you who do not know, the fix for a pre-1998 Hummer with a leaking heater core
is to upgrade it to the 1998 system - a costly and labor intensive task!
Although just over a month had passed, Lynch Hummer came through for me,
and offered to pay for all the parts necessary and for 11 hours of labor to do the update to the 1998 system.
Lynch drop-shipped the parts to
Motorquest Hummer in Massachusetts, and technician Steve Brajak did the labor. I now have the updated 1998 system in my truck.
I have been going through blower motors every 6 months or so - they are being replaced at AM General's expense under parts warranty, but obviously something is not quite right - seems like water is getting in there somehow and destroying the bearings.
HVAC Air Scoop:
While investigating the blower motor problem, Steve Brajak at Motorquest hypothesized that perhaps moisture was coming in through
the side vents, where air for the HVAC system comes in. He suggested that perhaps the scoops on the 1999 and newer trucks would
alleviate the problem. He spoke with a rep from AM General to see if they would pay the scoop as a potential fix, but they said
they didn't see that it would be a solution to our problem. I had been thinking about getting one anyways, so I bought and
installed the scoop at my own expense.
I painted it semi-flat black and installed it over the vent for the HVAC air intake...(like on the 1999 and newer trucks):
Once again, I have had it in for a replacement blower motor; AM General paid for the replacement, but informed the technician at my dealership that it would be "the last one." As if the failures are my fault!
I am hoping this is some kind of a misunderstanding, and I am following up with AM General. I have not heard back from any of my inquiries thus far, but I am sure they are just busy.
I will post more when I hear back from them.
